Welcome to 31 Days of Star Wars! As this is a new blog I thought this would be the perfect way for you to get to know me a bit by answering a different question about my Star Wars preferences each day in March. Today’s subject is…
Least Favourite Original Trilogy Change
Ahh the Original Trilogy. I’ve lost track of how many things have changed on these films. Some of the changes really enhance the films, others… not so much.
In my opinion, the worst change was the infamous decision to have Greedo shoot before Han.
Han Solo is clearly not meant to be a good guy at the beginning of A New Hope, he is an antihero who develops into a more regular hero as the trilogy continues. Having him shoot Greedo first was a great way to show the audience his character, and it feels odd to watch the build-up throughout the scene of Han readying his blaster only to be beat to the shot by Greedo.
Han: “Even I get boarded sometimes. Do you think I had a choice?”
Greedo: “You can tell that to Jabba. He may only take your ship.”
Han: “Over my dead body.”
Greedo: “That’s the idea. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.”
Han: “Yes, I’ll bet you have.”
But that is not the worst bit. By making Greedo shoot first, Greedo has to miss Han at a range of less than a metre. I have never fired a gun in my life and I am still confident I could at least hit a man that close to me! Yet the shot goes well wide and then oddly ricochets off the wall towards the ceiling, while Harrison Ford’s head does an awful little CGI bob to ‘evade’ the shot.
On the whole I think George Lucas’ changes improved the Original Trilogy, but I would much prefer it if Han shot first!
