31 Days of Star Wars – Day 22

Welcome to 31 Days of Star Wars! As this is a new blog I thought this would be the perfect way for you to get to know me a bit by answering a different question about my Star Wars preferences each day in March. Today’s subject is…

Favourite Moment from The Force Awakens

As much as I enjoy BB-8’s thumbs up, I can’t pick anything other than the moment Rey uses the force to take Luke’s original lightsaber.

The build-up was great, with Finn taking on a wounded Kylo Ren and holding his own for a while (just about) before being defeated. Kylo, who has already declared that the lightsaber belongs to him, reaches out with the Force to pull the lightsaber from the snowbank it has landed in into his hand, only for the lightsaber to fly right past him and into the outstretched hand of a shocked Rey.

I’m sensing a theme in my favourite moments from each film here when I say that once again, John Williams’ score makes the moment so much more memorable, as ‘The Force Theme’ plays in this moment that Rey takes hold of the weapon and prepares to fight Kylo, if ever you wanted a symbol that the mantle of the lead Force-user was being passed from Luke to Rey, this was it!

I can’t help but wonder how much more amazing this moment could have been had we not seen Rey resist Kylo’s mind probe and use the Force to escape captivity. Had we not been shown that she was force sensitive, the number of people who would have been shocked by the reveal being done in this way would have been huge, especially as many would have likely expected Luke to be there the moment the lightsaber passed Kylo.

Which is your favourite moment from the film? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you…
