31 Days of Star Wars – Day 21

Welcome to 31 Days of Star Wars! As this is a new blog I thought this would be the perfect way for you to get to know me a bit by answering a different question about my Star Wars preferences each day in March. Today’s subject is…

Favourite Moment from Return of the Jedi

I actually found this quite a difficult one to pick, not that I don’t like the film but there was not one moment that really stands out more than others. Eventually I settled on the duel between Luke and Vader.

The fights in the Original Trilogy are not so much the full-blooded battles we see in the Prequel Trilogy, but instead a series of attacks interspersed with dialogue, in this case as Vader attempts to turn Luke to the Dark side of the Force while Luke refuses to fight him. Eventually through Vader’s goading, Luke snaps and we see him fall close to the Dark side as he viciously beats Vader, only to stop when he hears the Emperor’s cackle and sees his father has a cybernetic hand just as he does.

“You underestimate the power of the Dark Side. If you will not fight, then you will meet your destiny.”

Once again, the music from John Williams is wonderful, especially in the finale of the fight as Luke gives in to his anger and hatred, you can’t help but worry if Luke really is going to fall as his father did before him. The visual effects improved as the Original Trilogy went on and the crossing of the red and green blades certainly had an effect on me as a kid – I remember having a toy of Luke’s green lightsaber and always wanting a green lightsaber as a kid!

Which is your favourite moment from the film? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you…
