31 Days of Star Wars – Day 16

Welcome to 31 Days of Star Wars! As this is a new blog I thought this would be the perfect way for you to get to know me a bit by answering a different question about my Star Wars preferences each day in March. Today’s subject is…

Favourite Moment from The Phantom Menace

People who have been reading this series regularly may have already guessed my favourite scene. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon’s duel with Darth Maul has already got my vote as best lightsaber duel in the series and it now gets the nod as my favourite moment in the entire film.

This battle gives us an idea of just how good the Jedi and Sith could be in battle and the 2v1 aspect is still a rarity in the saga films. Ray Park’s martial arts ability shines through in this battle and it is great to hear stories of how he influenced the character of Maul and his lightsaber to ensure he could give the best performance possible.

All this stunning fighting takes place through a changing environment, going from the hangar onto narrow platforms at different heights with a large drop around them, just adding to the tension as Obi-Wan is knocked off the ledge they are all fighting on.

And all the time, John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates” just adds extra layers to the battle and draws you in.

The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are generally fighting to avoid last spot when I rank the saga films, this sequence saves The Phantom Menace from a guaranteed spot at the bottom of my list.

Which is your favourite moment from the film? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you…
